What is VOCR?

VOCR (VoiceOver OCR) is a free accessibility tool for macOS developed by Chi Kim. It extends the capabilities of Apple’s VoiceOver screen reader by using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to identify and read text that VoiceOver cannot normally access.

VOCR in music production

A major focus of the webinar was the use of VOCR in music production.

Many music plugins and virtual instruments rely on graphical interfaces that are inaccessible to VoiceOver. VOCR can scan these interfaces and identify:

  • Parameter labels
  • Controls and settings

This enables blind musicians to work independently with software that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to use.

  • Other image-description systems

AI can provide:

  • Explanations of graphical elements
  • Context about visual interfaces
  • Additional information beyond simple OCR text extraction

This combination of OCR and AI can help users understand complex software interfaces more effectively.

Limitations of OCR and AI

Although VOCR is powerful, it is not perfect.

OCR limitations

OCR can:

  • Read visible text.
  • Detect many interface elements.

However, it may struggle to determine:

  • Whether a checkbox is checked.
  • The state of switches or toggles.
  • Graphical indicators without text labels.
  • Complex visual relationships.

AI limitations

AI descriptions can help fill some gaps but are not always accurate. In the current version of VOCR, users can also not interact directly with elements that have been identified by AI.

Users should:

  • Treat AI-generated descriptions as guidance.
  • Verify important information where possible.
  • Understand that AI can occasionally make mistakes.

During the live demonstration, Andre showed how users can:
