Basics - Editing

Editing most often refers to the process of cutting out unwanted material, and optimising the actual sound by applying simple processing such as compression, equalisation and noise reduction.  This will usually be for mono or stereo recordings, and the software used for this would be called a stereo editor. Examples of accessible software for this purpose are, at the more affordable end, Goldwave and Audacity for Windows PC, and Amadeus Pro for Mac. For more flexible and powerful processing, Sound Forge from Sony, for Windows PC, is effective and accessible.

Editing can also be performed in more complex Digital Audio Workstation software such as REAPER, Pro Tools and Logic, as introduced in the article titled “Basics – Mixing and DAWs“.
